Map the Fallen

一人でも犠牲者が出るなら、どんな目的であれ、戦争は回避すべきだ。一人でも犠牲者が出たなら、どんな成果があっても、その戦争は失敗だ。僕ら計算機科学者は、こういったプロジェクトにこそ、尽力すべきだと思う。

『Google Earth』の開発者であるSean Askay氏が、今年のメモリアル・デー[戦没将兵追悼記念日。米国の祝日で5月の最終月曜日]にまさにうってつけのプロジェクトを発表した。その名は「Map the Fallen」[戦没者を地図化]。「Google Earthを利用して、イラクとアフガニスタンで命を落とした5700人を超える米軍および連合軍の兵士たちに敬意を表する」という趣旨だ。Askay氏の説明によると、この地図は「見る人をそれぞれの兵士たちの物語に結び付ける。写真を見たり、彼らがどのようにして命を落としたかを 知ったり、友人や家族の言葉が記された記念のウェブサイトを訪れたり、彼らの故郷や死亡した場所を調べたりすることができる」という。美しく啓発的で、そしてとても悲しい。今すぐチェックすることをお勧めする。(MacユーザーはGoogle Earthの最新バージョンをインストールすること)
